Online shopping trend has attained much reputation because of people find it suitable to purchase from their homes and offices. In-store-retailors, do you want to be the same as like online shoppers doing now? Today’s time, the digital technology help to the merchant and retailer for scoring well in the sale using the advancement of web application and mobile app. If you heard something very new in this technology epoch, are you going to apply in your business? Beacon Technology is widely spreading for business enhancement. Big opportunity for retailers and wholesalers to expand their business to new heights and attract more consumers using Beacon Technology in retail.
What is Beacon Technology?
Beacon technology is a low cost, low powered and low energy Bluetooth device that uses low-frequency for transmitting weak signals to other Bluetooth-enabled devices. When the customer passes through the retailer’s shop, they will send a notification on Bluetooth enabled a device with discount offering coupons. The weak signals are thrown away by beacon can be boosted up by signal boosters. Beacon is a physical hardware device.
People misunderstand between Beacon and iBeacon. A Beacon is a physical device which has an antenna, Bluetooth Low Energy stack sends a packet where iBeacon is the layout of that packet. You can get the different layout from the different manufacturer. iBeacon is one proprietary of apple but that doesn’t mean android devices and other devices cannot see this beacon as well. Beacons and iBeacons are not really just for apple devices, you can use them across your customer base.
No internet connected
By default, the majority of beacons that are out there are not connected to the Internet. Eventually, some of the beacons will be Internet connected. It’s a chance that they will be able to send some device level data back to a platform. Generally, this is use more for remote updating of your beacons, maintenance, understanding which beacons have run out of battery, which ones need to replaced, which ones might have some issues, and less about tracking.
No one steals your data from your phone. You actually need to have explicit opt-in from your customers. They need to download your mobile app. They need to give access to a place. And then by doing that, you can take one of the beacon IDs for a beacon you have in a physical location and ask the app and operating system to check for that specific beacon ID. When the mobile device sees it in the wild, it will let the app know that it is seeing a beacon. Then the app can go back to your server and say, “Hey, as customer ABC, I’ve seen XYZ beacon,” and then you know to take action. Opt-in is required. The download is required. Privacy is very important with beacons. It is very well locked down. It shouldn’t be a customer concern.
Determining Distance & available size of Beacon
Standard beacons have an approximate range of 70 meters. The beacon technology works in foreground. You cannot set range and distance when the app is in the background when the screen is off, which makes it very tough to find location. Even when the screen is on, it can be a bit unreliable.
How long do you want your beacon to last versus how far do you want it to broadcast for? Does it depend on you which kind of beacon do you want to use? A manufacturer will design according to your requirement to positioning a beacon. A weatherproof, waterproof, or any other purpose. You could power your beacon anywhere from 2 meters, 10 meters right up to 70 meters. Depending on Tx power of your beacon will impact battery life.
Customer Insights & Help automatic buying
Beacons actually help to know about your customer insights. How long they stay in your store? If you find that customer staying in particular store for a long time and buying which product, might help you to re-target them again. You can track your customer’s choice of product, habits and send them messages about the product with a coupon code and good discount offers.
Beacon technology in retail
The retailers may have huge benefit using the Beacon Technology in the retail market. The technology was not initially accepted in the beginning of 2015.
